Why It Makes Sense To Start A Day Care

By: Fiona Lohrenz

So, you already know what you hate….your thankless job, ungrateful, uncaring boss, the grinding commute for hours, not spending time with your kids and the breathtaking pain you feel leaving them crying at a day care every day. You feel so trapped and paralysed by financial constraints yet can’t see a way out of the rat race. Worse still, you can’t ever shake the guilt and sorrow you feel at not watching your kids grow and develop during those formative years, not knowing what’s happening to them in their little, daily lives.

Despair no more because there is a way and it is a lot more achievable than you would have hitherto believed! It is possible to stay home with your kids and replace your income whilst cutting your expenses by starting your own home day care. ‘But how can I possibly make enough to match my current salary?’ I hear you cry. ‘Basic math’ is my response. Let’s start with an average gross monthly income of $2800.

Gross Income $2800
Minus Taxes $ 800
Minus Gas $ 150
Minus Day Care Costs $ 550
Minus General Expenses $ 300
Net Income $1000

So, bottom line, in order to replace your current income with home day care income you need to make $1000 per month. Based on an average monthly cost of $500 per child for day care you will need two children full time and you have achieved your goal. Not exactly insurmountable! Bear in mind that you can also offset many of your necessary living expenses against your business profits thus reducing your tax bill. Clever, fastidious bookkeeping can save you a considerable amount of money.

I use the example above to emphasize the importance of changing your mindset, bringing it down to the basics to see exactly what going out to work is costing both in financial and spiritual terms. We are all conditioned into the ‘employment’ mode and see entrepreneurialism as the realm of risk takers. Yet you can see how easy it is to become self employed by starting a home day care.

The benefits are immense and immediate. Quality family time becomes a given, you control your days and make your rules, you are active and having fun doing something worthwhile to all concerned. In my mind, it’s a no brainer.
