Is forensic nursing really an evolving field?

Forensic nursing is a specialized field about which many people are not very clear about. The moment the term forensic nursing comes to the mind, the horrible picture of crime scene comes into picture. People denote forensic nurses with medical practitioners on a murder scene. But the forensic nurses are not only associated with murder scenes. There are various specialization fields in forensic nursing.

Forensic nurse is simply a nurse, who specializes in collecting forensic evidence, legal evidence specialist, crime related procedures and much more. A forensic nurse is basically a link between the judicial system and the medical profession. The US law enforcement agencies are amongst the employers of forensic nurses. According to them the forensic nurse is an alarming enemy for the criminals. A forensic nurse is the one who has acquired the medical training as well as the training of a lawyer and also gains the ability to investigate like the police detectives.

Generally, forensic nurses are seen working at a hospital in the emergency room. That does not mean that all the patients who are admitted in the emergency room need the services of a forensic nurse. For this the patient needs to be assessed accurately. For instance, a distressed mother brings in her child who complains about his hurting arm. The reason the mother gives is because of smashing into the door he got hurt. In this case an x-ray of the arm is needed. As you never know maybe the mother had beaten the child fiercely on not cleaning his room properly. This was a kind of case when forensic nurses are needed.

Take another example. A boy comes rushing into the hospital with a woman in his arms and her face bleeding. The reason stated is she hurt herself while an accident with the boy on the driver’s seat. But is that possible? She has most of her injuries on the left side. The point is that if she was not driving then the wounds had to be on the right side. In this case also, a forensic nurse is a pre-requisite as this accident need both the medical examination as well as the criminal activity examination.

Forensic nursing not only restricts itself to the criminal investigations. The destruction which nature’s fury causes also needs the services of a forensic nurse. Collecting forensic evidence is also one of the specialties of forensic nursing known as Medico Legal Investigation.

Before choosing forensic nursing as a career the nurses very often ask one question. Does being a forensic nurse require them to work with dead bodies? But that will according to the option you choose. There are many of the career braches to select from in forensic nursing. Some of them are medical witness experts, nursing for sexual assault victims, death investigators, medico legal investigations, community education and many more.

The curriculum for this field is not much demanding at present. But there are certain basic qualities which constitute a much have for a forensic nursing aspirant. The nurses have to spend a majority of their time treating patients of sexual assault or child abuse. Legal law education is a must combined with the proper skills for collection of evidences and preserving the same.
