Some people classify breakfast as the "king of meals." In many ways, breakfast is that important, more so for people who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Scientists still don't know what the real cause of ADHD is, but the general consensus is that it is genetically-linked, so much so that it affects the brain circuitry. While there's not much one can do about the gene's part of the equation, there's a lot which can be done to help the brain function properly. The aim of this article is to create awareness of the importance of breakfast, and also touch on some nutrients which are helpful for brain development in both normal people and those with ADHD. Studies conducted in the United States several years ago found that children who went to school with a virtually empty stomach were more prone to display clinical levels of psychosocial dysfunction compared to their peers who were not hungry. It was found that those children who were hungry tend to display a greater range of behavioural, academic and emotions problems, including aggressiveness and anxiousness. In another separate study to examine the effects of having a nutritious breakfast, it was observed that increased nutrient intake did improve the kids academic and psychosocial functioning. The students who were fed with proper nutrients showed marked improvements in terms of attendance, less feelings of hunger, and improvement in many subjects, notably mathematics. No wonder medical experts often advised that children, especially those with ADHD, should observe a balanced diet which can improve two of their key problem areas - learning and behaviour. It should also be noted that a balanced diet would also serve to protect the child against chronic diseases like obesity, heart ailments, and diabetes. So, which nutrients are deemed important for behavioural and intellectual development? One of them is protein. It is a well known fact that protein deficiency can have a significant effect on a student's intelligence, cognition, and behaviour. Numerous studies have found that children who consumed proper protein-caloric beverage do consistently outperformed the undernourished kids in virtually all aspects of their lives. Iron is also important. It is well documented that iron deficiency can significantly affect children's learning and behaviour. Are you in the know that iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional problems among kids in America? Parents should take serious note of this because mild iron deficiency in infancy and childhood can be solved by taking iron supplements or food rich in iron. But if the deficiency in iron reached a "moderate or severe" level, iron supplementation may prove to be too late. The possible end result is severe neurological damage. Young adolescent females are particular prone to suffering a deficiency in iron. This is not surprising because of a spike in iron demands during puberty and through menstrual losses. A simple illlustration of the significance of iron in terms of attention, learning and memory can be seen during the school years. It is quite well documented that during elementary and middle school years, girls are superior in mathematics. But during the high school and college years, when puberty sets in and iron level dropped, maths scores also declined, which makes the boys look good in maths! The bottom line is that one needs to careful about the kids' nutritional requirements, more so if they have ADHD. By giving them proper meals, especially nutritious breakfast, it will go a long way towards improving their learning and behaviour in many ways.
