Increasing use of the Internet

The internet arrived just over twenty years ago and is now used by a billion people worldwide – with numbers soaring every year. The internet has changed the way we communicate and entertain ourselves. On average we check our emails five times a day and spend an hour a day writing and reading them. Americans now spends more time surfing the internet that reading newspapers, magazines, books or even playing video games. We are also busy reading and writing internet blogs – there are around 40 million with another 40,000 opening every day! Then there are internet forums and chat rooms where surfers can exchange views, swap information and make friends. The fastest growing area is social the network with sites like MySpace, Facebook and Bolt.com which allow users to upload and share photos, videos, and music. The internet has changed our shopping habits. British shoppers spent £7.5 billion online last Christmas and New Year. If we’re not shopping we’re gambling – with 24 million regular online gamers in the USA and UK alone.
