How to Get More Done When You Work from Home

By: Jacqueline McLaughlin

If you're a work at home mom you have unique problems. Unlike your commuting counterpart, you have tons of flexibility in your day. That may mean that it's difficult for you to get anything done.
There can be constant interruptions, endless household chores that call to you to do and family, friends and neighbors who may not understand that you actually have to work.

The theme for you has to be structure.

You have to structure your time. You have to plan time to work. You have to think of that time as sacred.

1. Each night look at your calendar for the next day and plan the time that you will work. What will you accomplish? How many hours will you work? When are your appointments? What do you have to do to prepare for them? How much time will that take?

2. You cannot work successfully if your children are demanding your attention. It is not "cute" when you're on a business call and your children are screaming and crying in the background. Train them to respect your work time. If you have younger children, you may have to work in many short bursts or...

3. Consider hiring a babysitter, particularly if you have preschool children. Just because you're home doesn't mean you will have the attention to give to them. True, they might be in someone else's care but the idea is to find someone who will come into your home so at least you will know what is going on and that your kids are safe.

4. Obtain a phone line for your business that is different from your home phone line. Do NOT answer your home phone during business hours. Let the answering machine pick it up.

5. Do NOT give out your business line to family, friends, neighbors or anyone else who might disturb you while you are working.

6. Maintain your focus! Do NOT allow yourself to be distracted by all of the household chores that may call to you. Instead schedule time to handle those issues later on in your day, when you're not as fresh.

7. Take yourself seriously. Just because you work at home does NOT mean that you do not have a legitimate business that is worthy of your complete attention. Give your business or your telecommuting job the same kind of respect that you would if you worked in an office.
