Faced with the possibility you cannot have a child is probably one of the most difficult and challenging experiences a woman can face. Feelings of guilt, loss and sadness can be absolutely overwhelming. Here are a few suggestions on how to deal with not being able to conceive. You need to face the situation head on. Denying there is a problem can only make it worse. Try not to let your emotions take over your thought processes. Don’t blame yourself. It’s not your fault. It’s just nature’s way of telling you it is not the right time. Avoid stress. Keep positive. Often times when you think all hope is lost, you become pregnant. Establish a loving dialogue with your partner; talk things out; let him know how you are feeling and allow him to express his thoughts and feelings as well. If there is no medical reason for not being able to conceive, have patience. If your doctor advises you the chances are nil; seek other solutions. Research other treatment options for you or your spouse. Don’t give up; but at the same time, don’t add any additional pressure. Discuss options with your spouse as to how long you are willing to try to conceive. Try not to allow others to dictate when you should stop trying; this is a decision between you and your spouse alone. Talk about other options, such as fertility treatments. Ask your doctor many questions as to the odds of getting pregnant; what other treatments you are or aren’t willing to try. Determine how much you can afford for such treatments. The anxiety caused by the high cost of treatment may be a determining factor as well. Above all, take care of yourself. Stay positive, healthy and pursue interests to keep yourself occupied. Stay informed as to the latest medical treatments; talk to other women who have had similar problems. Keep the dialogue open between you, your spouse and your doctor. Keep this thought it mind; if it is meant to be, it will be.
